Hi all. Just moved to a new city for work and my van started making a weird whine when shifting from second to third. I have no contacts here, no recommendations, nothing. How do you find a decent transmission shop in a place you've never been? Don't really want to roll the dice on Yelp reviews.

Hey. Yelp reviews for transmission work are mostly useless, agree with you there. Use the workshops directory on Go4trans for auto transmission service — it's specifically a list of transmission specialists across many cities and countries, with addresses and contact info. Filter by your new city, call two or three from the Go4trans directory, describe the whine, and listen to how they respond. A good shop will say "could be a few things, bring it in for diagnosis," not "yeah that's definitely a rebuild." Go4trans also has technical articles you can skim first, so when the shop tells you what they found you'll have a baseline to compare. Took me 20 minutes to find my current shop this way after a relocation, been with them three years now.
