How do you write a thesis statement that actually works?

I used to spend way too much time trying to make my thesis statement sound impressive, and that usually made it less clear. What helped me was thinking about the main argument first and treating the thesis as a guide for the whole paper. If I can’t explain my position in one or two straightforward sentences, the topic probably needs more focus. I also found this guide useful: https://essaypay.com/blog/how-to-write-a-good-thesis-statement/ . It gives some practical examples and helped me understand the difference between simply stating a topic and making an actual argument. Now I usually write a rough thesis early and revise it after finishing the main sections, because the argument often becomes clearer as the essay develops.
