I was listening to Dr. Laura the other day and a woman called in about a rape. She was deployed, out at a bar with co-workers. A co-worker (and someone thought she was a friend) walked her home and raped her. DL berated her for putting herself in that situation, it was her fault for being out drinking and had she not, it never would have happened.

What a fucked up view point. Some women dress "slutty", some women are huge teases, some women get sloppy drunk, that NEVER gives someone a reason to have sex with them without consent. I was so livid listening to the call, that is what is wrong with this world. Putting the blame on the victim will never fix the issue. You can be walking out of a coffee shop dressed in a turtle neck, hoodie & sweat pants and you may get raped. ALL the blame needs to be on the perpetrator.

Girl I hear you. And I agree, victim blaming is effed up and it is the perpetrator at fault regardless.

However, (I've been listening to dr Laura since I was a kid thanks to my mom lol) and I didn't listen to the call but, I think I know what dr l meant. We need to teach our girls safety. Yes we should be able to walk home after a night out or on our way home from work. But the fact is, we can't. The world is not a safe place and there are bad people around. They don't care what you're wearing or where you're from because they are bad people.
If we teach our girls to understand that they are responsible for their own safety (buddy system, don't accept drinks from a stranger, carry mace, whistles or attack alarms, learn how to assess situations for danger etc) I think we would raise young women who are street smart and recognize the reality and give them the upper hand; the power. We have to look out for ourselves. We don't live in a fairy tale with Prince Charming around the bend and woodland animals to have our backs. We need to have our OWN back and each other's.

Maybe that's still a form of victim blaming. But the way I see it is there are areas of Winnipeg you  simply don't go to so I don't get murdered.
You wear a seatbelt in the car.
Safety goggles and gloves when handling chemicals.  Why are rape attacks not thought of in the same sense? Assess the risk and react accordingly.

I realize the can of worms I could be potentially opening here  and I sincerely don't want to start an argument. Just my 2 cents.

Re: Today's Show! (not actually *today*)

I can't handle MC. I liked her the 1st time she was on, but the more I listen, the more annoying she is. Could she be a little more condescending, goody two shoes. Not only does she talk Mom stuff ad nauseam, she tries to be a Mom to Taylor on the show. Stop overtaking and trying to run the show-you are a guest host. For all that is good and holy, please don't let her be the new co-host

Re: Today's Show! (not actually *today*)

No argument here, JT!! All very good points! We all make decisions and have to live with the consequences. Like you said, assess the risk and act accordingly! I actually agree with some of the stuff that DL says when it has to do with like that is the choice you made, live with it. But I agree she is really shitty to women sometimes and blames it on feminism and liberalism and that makes me turn her off (I mean I'm not listening to DL on demand or anything, usually just my 12 minute commute home..and she loses me in 12 minutes a lot of the time!) but I will say, DL isn't claiming to be a feminist or "empowering women one self-deprecating story at a time"...what a load of shit.

That is actually a point I missed. It's two sides. Teach our young boys to respect women and not rape. Absolutely. But the same logic can be applied to any crime. Don't murder people. Don't steal. Pay your taxes.

And yet it still happens.

I'm just saying we proactively take steps to be safe in many ways. And I'm a firm believer in prevention. So why are we making women seem so powerless? Isn't that the reverse of victim blaming?

I can only handle so much of DL. I think she has a great mix of old school ways of thinking and tough love. And then she gets a little carried away with the shock value (or so it seems) and I have to give it a break. She raises my blood pressure!!

Re: Today's Show! (not actually *today*)

Some back tracking, but I do agree, JT. I lived downtown Toronto and always parked somewhere lit and preferably a manned lot if I was going to be late, stay out of certain issues, I don't get crazy drunk at bars (and even that, a guy tried something after I had gone to bed at a friends house. Luckily another friend was awake and made him leave), I don't hang around with people who are "dodgy", etc.

Saying all that though, I'm still not going to blame a woman for something happening. Its awful we have to teach our daughters that stuff, instead of just teaching our boys that no means no, and if she is unable to say no, that definitely doesn't mean yes.

Re: Today's Show! (not actually *today*)

DL is like a bad carwreck to me, I can't not listen. I have planned road trips around long weekends when they are doing 24hr replays of her!

While most of the time I think she's a crack pot, and totally favours men over women, I like her stance on dating your spouse and most people wont cheat if they are getting everything they need at home.

Re: Today's Show! (not actually *today*)

My mother is a psychologist which is a blessing and a curse...I think her children (myself included) are probably effed up as a result. That being said...I don't know how Dr. Laura has a license if she even does anymore. She treats her callers like petulant children and is rude and degrading all in the name of old school values. But people still love her and she's successful. Actually now that I think about it, if Taylor wants to keep being rude on periscope and snap chat she'll probably do just fine in her career...DL has.

Agree 100000%. The point most people sadly fail to see is that we need to teach boys that no means no.

It's the callers fault for putting herself in that situation, but it's not her fault she was raped. Those are two separate issues that seem to have been lumped together. Hence, victim blaming.

She has a PhD in physiology lol so it's funny that she has all this advice to give. But her schtick has always been tough love and no non-sense. Tay has been in the biz over 10 years and she still hasn't found her identity. So it won't work for her. She needs to be consistent. ie Dr. Laura. Or even Howard Stern. He's always been the way he is.

ETA: She recently got her license in family and marriage counseling. Not sure if it was one of those deals where she actually put the work in or they gifted it to her, like they do for actors/actresses all the time.

Omg, so I went back to see if I missed an important part of that story once I got settled at work, I don't think I missed anything. Now, they're talking about neighbors and this word is not typically in my vernacular, but I have to call a cunt a cunt. I sincerely hope the asshole caller that fed their neighbors dog Taco Bell w/ FIRE SAUCE is not a part of our group...why the hell would you do that to a poor defenseless animal?? Like it could help their shitty owners leave it outside to howl all night? What a dick move. I don't like kids, but I would never feed your baby hot sauce for my own amusement! And then those fools were laughing about it??

UPDATE: Now T's neighbor is a closet lesbian that is infatuated with her! What a freaking joke. Get Babette out of your head girl - NO ONE IS JEALOUS OF YOU.

Re: Today's Show! (not actually *today*)

I read the local news online and I almost always read the comments. No matter what the tragedy is, there's always someone who chimes in and says "well if they hadn't done xyz that wouldn't have happened". Its like, damn, hindsight is 20/20 and it must be nice to be 100% perfect 100% of the time! There's always going to be some way to figure out how blame the victim but why would you do that?? And the woman was calling dr. Laura for help. Maybe dr Laura is just an entertainer and says things for shock value but her callers arent calling for shock, they're calling for help! Wtf?

Re: Today's Show! (not actually *today*)

I mean, if you want professional help after a rape, go see a professional. Dr. Laura is one of the last people I would call for help if I had been raped. She has a show to run. This poor woman has been through something horrific. Why is she calling into a show meant for entertainment? I don't get it.

Re: Today's Show! (not actually *today*)

This video is awesome (a lot of hers are, and her makeup is AMAZING!) about calling Dr. Laura. I think she starts the actual story about 10 minutes in. If you enjoy her, the one about pooping at her boyfriends place is hysterical!

Yes! Such a trigger for me. I lived these experiences and now I work with survivors. I was sober, wearing normal clothes and in my OWN HOME when I was raped. There is already enough shame and guilt that goes along with this trauma. Survivors don't need any more of it. Sometimes I want to punch Taylors lights out when she speaks on these issues. SOOOO misinformed!
