Re: Today's Show! (not actually *today*)

Also, coloring one's face to look like someone else is also problematic because when a person of color dresses as a white person, they tend to not paint their faces white or peach. So there is a double standard. I am a black woman and I dressed as Hilary and never once thought to color my face white. Everyone still knew who I was.The fact that I don't think of that but others do is something to think about. Now I'm wondering if it would have been offensive if I had painted my face. I will have to ask around.

WhereIsVictoria wrote:

The blackface of yesteryear was more than just painting your face... THAT was absolutely racist because it was presenting the belief that black skinned people were stupid and only to be laughed at. It was a form of entertainment and it is quite disgusting from a 2016 point of view. That said, someone painting their face to look more like Bill Cosby says nothing about the entirety of any race. It's mildly insulting the way you're speaking to me, but it looks like we'll just have to agree to disagree.

Did the people you know that are kind and intelligent explain to you why they voted for Trump in light of the things he said that were bigoted and racist?

Loved today's show, Taylor and Lori (the cohost) were hysterical in their discussion about Tom Brady. They were gettting delirious and having so much fun. I love Lori.

Taylor has done well handling the post-election emotions that she and all the callers are experiencing.  I really liked how she's still managed to keep it light and fun, which is what I have needed.

The common opinion was that Hillary is a corrupt politician and they wanted to see America go in a different direction than it has been. Now I am no Trump fan, but I still don't get specifically why people say he is racist. Is it because he wants to deport illegal immigrants? Because he called illegals rapists? Because he doesn't want Syrian refugees in the country?

My personal stance on this and I think what we as a society have to embrace is that racism isn't black and white. We treat racism like it's all one thing, but there are a lot of shades of grey to it. My background is in psychology, and I can tell you from a neurological standpoint, we are wired to be racist, so we all are a little bit.

However, some of us are less inhibited than others in trying to control it. Saying all Mexicans are rapists is simply untrue and pretty far down the spectrum of racism, along with not rejecting a nomination from the KKK.

Sexism is the same. You don't have to overtly assault women or even make sexist comments to act in a sexist way (though Donald Trump has allegedly done both of these things). The way he refers to Hillary as a "nasty woman" first is a true sign of sexism. It's putting a woman in her place and not allowing her to have space to have an opinion because opinionated woman are "nasty." Additionally, the fact that he first and foremost refers to the way women look and rates them on a scale of 1 to 10 is a step backwards for gender equality.

I really feel if we could understand the varying levels of racism and sexism and not have it be either you are racist or you aren't, we would understand the gravity of electing someone who is so far along in the scale.

Additionally, the way we've constructed justice in our country is in a very punishing way rather than being victim-centered. We don't attempt to educate or have the person understand what the victim might be feeling or why their actions were offensive to try to actually fix the problem. We just go straight to persecution even when the person themselves may not see themselves as outright racist or sexist.

I love this shit (sorry if I am going off). I teach social sciences, so this is my glory.

Re: Today's Show! (not actually *today*)

Honest question...what does we are all wired to be racist mean?

11/11/2016 9:48 am  #3488

Re: Today's Show! (not actually *today*)

That may have been a harsh choice of words. I just meant that our brain is wired to look for patterns. It's a survival mechanism so back when we were in peril often we could know who was safe and who wasn't. We look for patterns and that creates bias. So we all inherently have biases in how we construct races, genders, etc.

One example of Trump being racist has to do with supporting racial profiling to identify illegal immigrants and Muslims in our multicultural and multiracial nation.  His argument is that we need to question all people who look like they are from the middle east or mexico b/c we can't afford not to.  It is absolutely ridiculous that all Muslims should have to be associated with extremists and terrorists by our new president and that all illegals are rapists. This logic is similar to Hitler's. I think the examples of racism and sexism are endless with Trump.

Re: Today's Show! (not actually *today*)

I also think by not denouncing David Duke immediately is pretty disgusting. Even if trump doesn't believe these things by not denouncing them it give those type of people a leg to stand on. Also, it was wildly reported and noticeable on Twitter the anti-Semitic attacks on journalist and people who opposed him. He has a Jewish daughter and grandchild. He is not anti-Semitic, but never came out and blatenly said it? Why?

It's so easy to dismiss racism when you don't have to experience it daily.

We need to focus on the next local elections of 2018. If there is less red in the senate or house there can be a better balance of power. Right now there is no majority opposing side in either the house or senate so there is no balance in protecting or advocating for more liberal or progressive legislation.

This made me chuckle... Taylor starts every sentence with a physical description of how beautiful someone is. How skinny they are makes them good or bad; right or wrong in her book. HOWEVER, in yesterday's show with Carly A. she actually made me laugh (and was laughing at herself...one self-deprecating story at a time, right?) when she got caught up in trying to say that women shouldn't be judgemental and found herself judging someone in her story (it was about Lala from VPR). She started laughing more and more as she realized she was digging a hole... And it was funny and refreshing. But she still preaches all the time about not judging, yet starts most stories with the appearances card.

Friday's show with Carly Aquilino was hilarious!!! Now that girl would be a fun co-host! Although I have enjoyed rotating hosts, some are better than others. I think Carly and Taylor together make me laugh the most

Taylor said something about an upcoming announcement about Carly being around a lot more. Sounds like she's going to be a permanent co-host to me.  I guess we'll find out if it means she's in the regular rotation or if they're going with the same person every day. I'm hoping for the latter!

Re: Today's Show! (not actually *today*)

Naughty Gossip (Rob) has been hinting on Twitter the same thing. And it seemed like the same with Laurie Bergamatto the other day. I'm so tired of trying to figure out who the co-host is each day (how hard is it to post in more than one place and to do it ahead of time? Does it have to be a secret???) that I want to....(fill in the blank...). I just want consistency.

I know, it's very slow.  Perhaps, like me, everyone is just OVER it all.  I check in here frequently but haven't listened to the show for months.  I keep checking in the hopes that something has changed.  Alas....

Re: Today's Show! (not actually *today*)

I still listen every day, and I mean the entire show (thank you on demand). I actually find it very entertaining, and still more enjoyable to listen to in the am than anything else. The co hosts have been great. I agree, it would be better if they would settle on a permanent co host, or at least a couple rotating ones, but in the meanwhile, I've been enjoying it.

I agree.  I haven't found anything else to listen to in the mornings that is light.  Taylor is really trying and some of the cohosts are really funny.

Same, I'm not sure when I last listened. I have been listening to Podcasts lately (MyFavoriteMurder is great for anyone into that sort of thing. They take a light approach, different then something like Undisclosed that is fact based) and am enjoying that. I heard Taylor on Stassi the other day and that interview did nothing for wanting me to start listening again.

I never would have imagined I would love Clay AIken like I love him now. I think he killed it this morning! The first time he co-hosted was so-so (still good but...) he was in a groove this morning and I loved it.

I have to agree with you!! I love him...like really love him, too!! He is funny, normal, stays true to himself, he's SMART, knows a fair amount of what's going on in pop culture, and oh yeah...he's got that NC accent that makes him even funnier!!! I have enjoyed him both times...and surprised myself! I'll have to say, they've had a couple of male comedians who were so NOT funny...and Clay is killing it!

Totally agree!!! who would have thought Clay Aiken. What in the world has he been up to lately and how did he land this gig? He is more down to earth with a little flamboyancy which cracks me up. He sounds much smarter than I ever gave him credit for.

I could go for a couple of rotating hosts.
