Re: What are you listening to?

I don't know how I feel about S-Town. Definitely not what I had expected, but interesting for sure! I had purposefully stayed away from anything that could be a spoiler, so I was truly expecting it to be more similar to Serial (don't want to give spoilers...). I, too, feel unresolved. I hope we are given updates periodically on goings on in S-Town!

Re: What are you listening to?

This is going to be vague because I don't want to spoil it for anyone- but I could have done with a lot less "clock-talk" in the last episode and more about the fate of his mom/cousins, and T. I realize that there isn't much to be resolved per se, but I still think they could have been a better job tying up the loose ends.

I might be from the Sunshine State, but I can still be a little shady.🌴

It definitely took a turn I wasn't expecting either, and even though it turned out to be so different, I actually really like it for the sort of "slice of life" piece that it is. I always find it incredible what fascinating stories can be found in such unlikely places.

I just started it today and I'm already on episode 4! Soooo good!

I started it this week too I'm on episode 5. I like it too

Ditto! The first episode I was a little skeptical but now I'm on 4 and I am hooked!!

Yes, me too! I love This American Life for this reason. There are some stories that have truly changed my outlook on life.

Re: What are you listening to?

I was just looking for some reviews and ran across this article - I was so enthralled with the story that it never occurred to me that production should have ceased after the "turning point" or that the whole thing could be controversial, but after reading this I'm not sure what my position is. This is a really interesting perspective on the piece - what do you all think?

I read this article today and totally agree with it.
I'm not sure John would have wanted some of that to come out.
Don't want to talk specifics because I don't want to ruin it for anyone else.

Re: What are you listening to?

I also agree with the article. I had thought about it while listening, how invasive it felt without John's consent. Though, I suppose, Brian and those who knew him felt comfortable enough to share so maybe they "knew" John wouldn't care?

Re: What are you listening to?

I've been listening to Carrie On. It's a Sex and the City podcast. The two hosts are *spoiler alert* now engaged, although it starts out with them dating. And they always have a third cohost each week.
It's very funny, in my opinion, and I love hearing their point of views on each episode.
If you love Sex and the City, give it a listen!

Re: What are you listening to?

I felt the same about Stown. I'm conflicted because I liked it, I just thought the ending would be more like serial as someone said. I did still enjoy it for the most part. I never thought about what was said about john but now I wonder...

You can read the article after episode 3 if you want- there's really nothing to spoil after that.

**Possible Spoiler**

I'm conflicted too and could really go either way on it - I think most people would not be thrilled if they were in John's shoes in this situation, but John was definitely not "most people." When I look at who stands to be hurt because of the podcast, the only people who really come to mind are John, and per his own beliefs it doesn't affect him now, and his mom who has dementia and probably has no idea any of this is going on. Perhaps some small-minded people in Woodstock and other small towns just like it will judge John based on the personal details revealed in this podcast, but I think a great many more people now know about and appreciate him for the unique and special person he was, and I think he would be pleased with how his story has been received. At least I hope so, but who knows.

Re: What are you listening to?

The podcast "Crime Writers On" had a couple of episodes dedicated to talking about S-Town. I sometimes get annoyed with delving too deep into the meaning behind pop culture, podcasts, etc., but this was well done and thought provoking. Just thought I'd share!

Re: What are you listening to?

Not really a "listening to" but following on Instagram...I don't get 25Parks appeal? Anyone else feel this way?

Re: What are you listening to?

Omg yes I had to unfollow her she would be funny for a minute then go on these tangents about being bullied online and I had to unfollow her. I tried refollowing later but same thing happened. Not trying to downplay online bullying but that's not why I follow an Instagram account especially when I don't actually know you.

YES!! and it's very odd to me that she tries to fight online bullying with bullying.

I did the same as you, i unfollowed her after she literally started a Instagram page to bully bullies, but something made me re-follow recently, i'm about to unfollow again.

I did. It was pretty funny. Taylor told stories we all know, but it didn't bother me because I'm sure most of the kittens don't listen to Wake Up. I laughed out loud a few times, but that's honestly nothing new because I love the podcast.

I listen daily. It has replaced Wake Up for me. I love the chemistry between the three of them. All so different but it works.

Ugh. Our cable bill was ridiculous so we cancelled HBO! I'm so bummed.
There's podcast episodes about this story and I read about it online... so crazy.
Is it a documentary or docu series?

Re: What are you listening to?

It's a documentary about this girl Gypsy Rose Blancharde - her mom had Munchausen By-proxy and basically said Gypsy had all these illnesses her whole life (muscular dystrophy, cancer, the list goes on..) Her mom would shave her head and had her in a wheelchair, had a feeding tube, was giving her all a closet full of medications that basically made/kept her sick. She didn't even really know how old she was. It's so nuts. So all of this was basically a long-term con by the mom (DeeDee) to get attention and charity (they got a couple trips to Disney - like a Make-a-Wish type situation, a house from HFH with wheelchair access, etc)

Anyway, Gypsy ended up meeting this kid on like Christian Mingle and they ended up killing DeeDee, and posted about it on FB. He's I think getting life and Gypsy took a plea and got 10 yrs. it's so sad because she went through so much abuse her whole life. There's a ton more crazy details, the kid I believe had Asperger's and was also into BDSM. They also had Gypsy's dad who was living in The bayou and had like no clue his daughter wasn't really sick this whole time (DeeDee was very good!) everyone was shocked to find out that Gypsy could actually walk the whole time... Sorry for the scattered thoughts, so many details!!

What the DeeDee put her through was absolutely crazy. She had Gypsy on anti-seizure meds which I'm sure have so many side effects and she even had her salivary glands removed.
I hope they put this doc on Netflix soon.
