Romaine of Derek and Romaine posted in the Facebook group explaining why there is a cost.
Here's part of it:
I know many of you have asked why the subscription fee? It’s pretty easy to explain actually. Doing Radio is expensive. We have a lot of costs to provide a live daily streaming show. There are studio costs, producer salaries to pay, and of course the price of the actual streaming services. Podcasts are typically free but Taylor isn’t doing a standard podcast. She is doing a live daily online radio show that then has the functionality to act like a podcast after the fact. Not to mention it is commercial free. So I hope that explains some things.
He’s answering the wrong “why”. I have no doubt it’s “expensive” to stream a live radio show everyday. But WHY did Taylor choose this route? Did she ask her loyal listeners what they wanted? Did everyone beg her for 10 live hours per week at any cost? Or would her loyal listeners have preferred a free “standard” weekly podcast? Time will tell of course, but I think it’s clear this decision was 100% about Taylor. Maximum income, minimal work.
I think Taylor went the faux radio route because she wants real-time caller interaction. However, even on Sirius the same 5-10 sycophants called in all the time and reiterated their same opinions. It was stale. With this much more limited audience it’ll be even more of a cesspool of halfbaked ideas and opinions. I don’t think she’s thinking about how dry it will become with the same few people calling in all the time.
Also people on Facebook are praising the commercial free aspect, but really who wants to listen to ANYONE talk nonstop for two hours straight, much less repeating the same stories over and over and over. Commercials are a nice break and natural segue to a new topic.
I think Taylor’s biggest issue is that she doesn’t seem to have much of a life outside of TD, Matt and drinking. She has no fresh and new stories because she doesn’t do shit to gain any fun experiences, perspective or anything else. Who wants to listen to someone talk about nothing?
You are so right! I hadn’t even thought of this...but it’s going to be daily phone calls from CCC and Nati! All the same little group of BBs will call in everyday and have a private little chat because they are the idiots supporting “our Taylor”.
One person commented “How will she get new subscribers if no one knows who she is and she’s charging?” And the next comment said, “Why do you care about this?” Talk about bitchy!! I have the same question....they seem to think her free “Best Of” (however frequently that will be) is going to rake in the millions of new people to listen.
Now I kind of want to post “How does the Morning Breath do their show for free?” 😝

All good points. Here is my take on it: 2 hours is going to go very quickly, and once all the small talk gets out of the way, and the briefing the co-hosts on everything that's been talked about and going on earlier in the week gets out of the way (you know that will happen because that became the bulk of Wake Up everyday) you know we'll be left with maybe an hour of actual segment related content. Hell, look how long stuff from the 7 Things could take before, and it seemed like the first hour of Wake Up vanished quickly every day. So, I just feel like I'm going to have to pay extra for a shorter, less entertaining Wake Up 2.0- she is even attempting to keep the same segments as before and I'd stopped enjoying a lot of them because they got stale and were the same topics all the time. (Being a bridesmaid sucks, what are your most spoiled moments, mean girls, bad friends, food and needing to lose weight- that was about it towards the end) I wish she was launching a whole new show with a different format, that might be worth my money......

Ok, she now has too many social media sites...Taylor, here's a tip: Since you are not social media savvy, scale back. Fans know your Taylor Strecker IG...no need to now have a TTSS one as well especially since the postings are essentially the same. You have the official Taylor Strecker FB page plus not a TTSS one. Same for Twitter. Too much! Streamline and do a few really well!

The morning Breaths show has tons of money and its not podcasting for a living (thank god cause it sucks)
Romaine and derick have a following that subscribe and apparently they can make a living doing a daily podcast because it’s a job for them not a hobbie like other weekly podcasters.
If Taylor can make a go at it for subscribers only and make a living then why not? She is not doing this for fun it’s her living just like them.

I don't think anyone is saying she should do it for free, that's totally up to her. She is really narrowing her audience by doing it this way though I would imagine. Which is totally cool if she's good with sticking with former listeners, I would think she would want it to be huge though.

I'm still not sure if I'll sign up. I don't have a free two hours a day to listen, I can't get through all the regular podcasts I listen to now, unless I'm really into it (have binged most of Emma today!), 40hrs a month is crazy. Is it worth $7/month to listen sporadically? The money isn't the issue. But I think I would be paying $7 and rarely tuning in. I think I'll give her free one a shot and see if it's interesting enough to keep listening. I'm not interested if it's the same WU stories.

My thing is I don't want to pay for what WUWT became in the last 1+ year. It was the same show over & over. I am really hoping Taylor uses this as a shot in the ass to deliver a well prepped funny product. If it is, I might pay. I do agree that this format is limiting her audience reach and, therefore, appears to not be a great business decision.

I totally get where Taylor is coming from and why she picked the format she did. She knows radio, she is comfortable with that format and she wants to generate revenue for herself as quickly as possible. She just lost her whole salary and she was probably in a bit of panic mode while trying to figure out her next move. I'm not hating on her for it, I get it. BUT... (of course I have a but- ha!) I just don't think it was the smartest move if she wants to grow her entertainment career. I think it will be difficult to bring in new listeners when you are charging for a radio stream. I think she didn't get sponsors because it's hard and she doesn't want to be beholden to sponsors- but it would have been a better move, in my humble ass opinion. Honestly, Iif I were in Taylor's shoes, I would have taken some sort of a job to get a salary back (probably would try to work in sales for a designer store- she could build a kick ass wardrobe for her T.V. auditions with those awesome discounts, and be generating a salary- two birds with one stone) and would do a free podcast on the side (with sponsors) to bring in not only my old following but also generate a bigger following. Then as more hosting and T.V. gigs roll in she could eventually ditch the job and be back into full time entertainment. It would take work and hustle for sure, but I think it would be a safer move with better future returns. But what do I know, really- I don't work in entertainment.

Hawr-rible, i think you’re right on. I did a little calculation this morning and I think she needs a minimum of 1,500 subscriptions to be making back the money she likely lost in salary, after her production and hosts costs. I have no insider or entertainment knowledge, that’s just based on some of the info we’ve found online. Are there really 1,500 people who are going to pay right off the bat?

Boy I hope so for her sake, but it's sure not guaranteed, is it? Freelance entertainment careers aren't a get rich quick sort of thing, unless you land an amazing opportunity right off the bat. I just think a streamed radio show is not that sort of opportunity. But maybe it is! Only time will tell.

I agree getting new listeners will be hard, but I bet she picks up a bunch from DnRs show on top of her loyal base. So much of her show is taking calls and real time news/pop culture that doing a live show only fits. Terrestrial radio would not work way to censored. I like the idea of bring more shows on with them like Emma’s and few others then have the app that allows you to get them all for one price.
I’m seeing very cool things coming from this honestly.
Taylor needs to get some business people around her and someone that is good with social media.
If she plays her cards right this could be a great opportunity. I’m pulling for her not to fuck this up!!!

Here is a thought.....what if she offered a free subscription, for whatever period of time (3 months?) to the current DnR subscribers. Not anyone that signs up after she launches obvi because people would milk that system immediately. But if she waived the subscription fee for anyone that as of now already has a subscription, I bet those people would check out her show, because why not? It would be free to give her a shot. That could potentially give her a new pool of listeners.....

escaping pivot table quarter close hell for some quick agreement here....1500 is just 3% of her IG following (45k), but 33% of her facebook supporters (aka BBs @ 4k). Her personal facebook page has 11k. Her biggest number of likes is around 3000 on both IG and FB. I'm guessing Matt and company have told her they'll hit that today based on those numbers. I'm thinking those are really bad bets.
There's a website out there that calculates the legitimacy of followers, but I can't for the life of me remember what its called and perhaps it was only for bloggers. I've never heard of ppl buying followers on FB, but I have on IG....so my guess is that her FB is more legit.

I don't understand. The website says "The price for membership is $0.00 now and then $6.95 per Month after your 8 day trial." Does that mean if I sign up now I get 8 days free? Or is the 8 day trial the 8 days until the show actually begins? If so, that's very misleading. I e-mailed them. I will post if I get a response.

Honestly, she needs more of an online presence. It’s easy to do an Instagram Live while walking around the city. Go Live from the We Work Offices. Show us behind the scenes. Post more photos being out and about around the city. The weather is going to be a lot warmer in NYC this week. Get out there and show us that you’re living your best life in an amazing city. Go to the Fashion week events. Do something!!! I loved listening back in the day when she didn’t just sit home every night. I also feel like she cared more about the way she looked. She made an effort to show that she was fashionable. How can someone in their 30’s and working in entertainment, not know much about the internet??? TD is a photographer.. she should be educated in social media, technology, etc.. we photographers have to be these days! So why can’t she help TS? I just don’t get it. She is better off trying to start a YouTube channel. She could at least make money off of Adsense! Then again, that requires hard work, motivation, dedication, and time. She wants instant fame. It’ll never happen!

This is the e-mail I sent:
I'm not sure what it means when it says you pay $0.00 now and then $6.95 per month after your 8 day trial. Does that mean if I sign up now, I get 8 days free and we won't be charged until 1/26/18? I'm confused.
This is the response I received:
No it means you are pre-subscribed and you won’t be charged the monthly fee of $6.95 until the show goes live in 8 days…our first show if next Tuesday January 8th!!!!!THANK YOU for signing uppppppp!!!!!!!!!xxTay
So, the "free trial" wording is totally misleading. All they have to say is sign up now and you will be charged when the first show airs on 1/16/18. In the e-mail response she even got the date wrong that the show is starting!!
