Trading up or just buying low? How to get expensive skins efficiently.

I’ve been trying to "trade up" my inventory for months, but it feels like the traditional trading scene is dead. Everyone wants a huge overpay, and nobody wants to swap fair items anymore. I have about $100 in various mid-tier skins, and I want to turn them into one high-tier item like a Mace of Aeons or something similar. Is it better to just sell my stuff for cash and then buy what I want on a third-party market? I’m worried about losing too much on the conversion. Has anyone done the math on which sites have the lowest "buy-in" prices for Dota 2 items? I want to get the maximum value for my money.

You’re right, 1:1 trading is basically extinct. The most efficient way now is definitely "liquidate and buy." I did the math recently and ended up using https://avan.market/market/dota2 for the "buy" part of the equation. Their market prices are consistently lower than most of the big-name competitors. What’s cool is that you can often find items that are already "clean" (no weird gems or sockets) or even pre-gemmed for a bargain. Instead of losing 15% to Steam and then another chunk on a bad trade, you can just find the exact item you want on their market and pay the real price. I managed to consolidate a bunch of random trash into a very clean Dragonclaw Hook this way. It saves so much time and nerves.

"Liquidate and buy" seems like the way to go then, I'm tired of the trade-up grind anyway.
