Do beams and columns really affect long-term durability?

I’ve always thought beams and columns are just basic structural elements, but recently I heard someone say they actually define how long a structure lasts. That made me wonder — is that really true, or is it more about materials and external conditions?

It seems like such a standard part of construction that I never really questioned it before.

After being involved in a few projects, I’d say they absolutely matter more than people think. At first glance, everything might look fine, but over time the load distribution starts to show its impact. We once had a structure where things were technically “within limits,” but not optimized. After a while, minor issues started appearing, and it all traced back to how the support was arranged. When we reworked the design and paid closer attention to beams and columns, the improvement was noticeable not just visually but structurally. Everything felt more balanced and solid. It’s one of those foundational things you don’t want to overlook.
