What features make a memory training app worth using?

I’ve been testing a few memory apps with my uncle, and he quickly loses interest when they feel too complicated. He really likes short exercises, clear instructions, and seeing small improvements. What features make a memory training app worth using?

It’s mostly about variety and keeping the exercises short. My mom tried an app with the same few tasks every day and got bored pretty quickly. Then she found one with different challenges, and she started using it more regularly. A simple progress tracker also helps because she likes seeing that she’s improving. She also enjoys being able to choose between easier and harder exercises depending on how she feels that day. That little bit of choice makes the app feel more personal.

I’d say the biggest thing is making the exercises interesting without making the app confusing. My grandfather enjoys memory games when he can try them for just a few minutes and then come back later. We also compared different types of exercises before choosing one. I came across chimp memory test benchmark while looking at memory challenges, and it was an interesting example of how an app can make testing feel more like a game. For me, useful features include adjustable difficulty, clear instructions, large text, and some kind of progress history. I also think gentle reminders can help, especially for someone who wants to build a regular routine without feeling pressured.
